"The torture" appears in several versions between 1907-1907, each having a slightly modified form and crated from different materials. It is a deeper theme of "Child", Brancusi trying to convey the spiritual state of the sculture.
The transition from the previous plaster version into the bronze one brings an incrreased sense of sensibility .

It is a work of synthesis, which is the first step to ovoid shapes that will culminate with the sculpture for the blind.
To accentuate the suffering of the model, the artist suppressed the bottom of the bust and left forearm.
